The Older Sister

Day 16 of 31

My older sister, Mary, in the middle of me (R) and my twin sister (L)

She’s my older sister

Three years older and three years wiser

She left the nest first

For marriage and then for kids

They worked hard, she and her husband

Then the unexpected

He wasn’t expected to make it but he did

My sister honored her vows when many would not

She works hard, harder than most and definitely harder than me

To provide for her family

These last few years of mother management have been rough

We are a good team of house cleaner outers and bad news givers

Sometimes we work together and at other times we divide and conquer

I’m not sure how either of us would have gotten through without the other

Good or bad, we rarely cry

Allens tend not to cry and we are Allens for sure

We laugh together because sometimes that’s all we can do

We weren’t taught to say, “I love you”

But I know she loves me like I love her

She’s my older sister

Three years older and three years wiser

You shared so much here. My favorite lines that took me into the deep were –

    “Then the unexpected

He wasn’t expected to make it but he did

My sister honored her vows when many would not”

There is so much to love about this post. As the older sister, I see my relationship with my sister in your poem. I am particularly struck by the lines
“He wasn’t expected to make it but he did

My sister honored her vows when many would not”

The threads of your relationship with your sister are clearly woven tight with happy and sad memories — but one thing seems clear — the fabric will hold, no matter the circumstance.

I can see how your relationship with your sister pulls you through the hard parts of life. She seems so strong. I hope you’ll share this poem with her!

Sisters are the best! “We weren’t taught to say, “I love you”But I know she loves me like I love her…” This rings so true! We rarely say I love you to our siblings, yet we know!

I feel a rhythm in your poem that keeps me reading, and I like the repetition at the end. I like the line, “We weren’t taught to say I love you”. It seems to give the history needed to fill-in the gaps. A real pleasure to read!
